What to Pack for a Yoga Retreat — The Complete List

By Andrea Hill

The art of packing for a yoga retreat is take less stuff — retreats aim to simplify your life and remove clutter. The less stuff you bring, the less baggage you carry, the more you can concentrate on becoming the real you.

For a yoga retreat, pack comfortable yoga clothes (3-4 sets); a light cover-up for relaxation; long sleeved layers for cooler mornings; a swimsuit if there is a pool or sea; flip flops; a journal and pen; a refillable water bottle; casual evening clothes and a jumper; and any personal items you cannot be without.

The Art of Packing Light

If there is one thing I have learned from leading yoga retreats in Sicily, Ithaca, Puglia, Spain and Norfolk, it is this: people always overpack. Every single time. And then halfway through the retreat, they tell me they wish they had brought less.

A yoga retreat is an invitation to simplify. To strip back. To discover that you need far less than you think you do. Let your packing reflect that intention.

Yoga Retreat Essentials

Yoga Clothes (3-4 Sets)

You will typically practise twice a day on retreat. You will sweat. You will want fresh clothes for each session, plus time for things to dry. Three to four sets of breathable, quick drying yoga clothes is the sweet spot:

  • 2 pairs of leggings
  • 3 pairs shorts
  • 3-4 tops (fitted vests or t-shirts)
  • 3 yoga bras (if applicable)
  • 1-2 lightweight long-sleeved layers for cooler mornings

Choose fabrics that dry quickly. Cotton will feel heavy and be too baggy.

Casual Clothes for Off-Mat Time

Retreats are not all yoga. Pack:

  • 2-3 casual outfits (sundresses, linen trousers, shorts, light shirts)
  • 1 slightly nicer outfit for a dinner out
  • A light cardigan, jumper or shawl for evenings
  • Comfortable flat sandals
  • Walking shoes if the retreat includes hikes

Swimwear

If your retreat includes a pool, beach, or sea (and mine in Girona, Sicily, Ithaca, and Puglia all do), bring a swimsuit and goggles, plus a sarong or cover-up.

Sun Protection

For Mediterranean retreats: a good SPF 30-50 sunscreen, sunglasses, a sun hat, and after-sun or aloe vera.

Toiletries and Health

Your regular toiletries in travel sizes, any prescription medication (bring more than you need), insect repellent (especially for Italian retreats), a basic first aid kit, and a reusable water bottle.

A Journal

A journal or plain notebook and pen is an essential people often forget. Journaling and practicing gratitude are a fundamental part of my retreats. Things come up — thoughts, emotions, insights, ideas — that you will want to remember.

The Nice-to-Haves

  • A good book — many people find they read more on retreat than they have in months
  • A light shawl or blanket — useful for meditation, for cooler mornings, for savasana
  • Earplugs and an eye mask — worth their weight in gold if you are a light sleeper
  • A small bag or tote — for trips to the beach or the local village
  • Essential oils or a favourite tea — small comforts that make a space feel like yours

What You Do NOT Need to Pack

  • A yoga mat — most retreat venues provide mats and props
  • Smart clothes — retreat life is gloriously casual
  • Too many shoes — flip flops, sandals, walking shoes. That is all.
  • A beach towel — all my venues provide pool or beach towels
  • Your laptop — that's a NO. Retreats are a chance to disconnect.
  • Seasonal clothes — you won't need big jumpers or coats

Packing for Different Retreat Destinations

Sicily and Puglia (Italy): Warm to hot. Pack light, breathable fabrics. Sun protection is essential.

Ithaca (Greece): Similar to Italy but can be windier. Bring a windproof layer for the boat transfer. Water shoes are very handy for the rocky beaches.

Norfolk (UK): Pack layers. A waterproof jacket. But also pack for sunshine — Norfolk can be glorious.

One Final Thought

The most important thing you bring to a retreat is not in your suitcase. It is your willingness to show up, to be present, to let go of the everyday and step into something different.

Pack light. Travel light. Be light.
