Yoga builds functional strength, improves flexibility, prevents injury, and enhances performance in other sports. Yoga is one of the most effective training tools available for men, addressing the tight hamstrings, restricted shoulders, and lower back tension that are common in male bodies. It's not by accident that the top football clubs, elite rowers, tennis players and runners all include yoga in their training programs.
How Yoga Helps Men
Men tend to carry tension differently from women: tighter hamstrings, more restricted hips, stiffer shoulders, and a tendency to rely on muscular strength rather than flexibility. This imbalance leads to injury, reduced performance, and chronic pain — particularly in the lower back and shoulders.
Yoga systematically addresses these imbalances. It does not require you to be flexible (that is the whole point), and it builds the kind of functional, full-body strength that gym work often misses.
I created my Yoga for Men class specifically because I know that walking into a general yoga class can feel intimidating for men who have never tried it.
These days my male students either take private lessons with me or join in any of my group classes because they feel confident and comfortable practising alongside female counterparts.
Recommended Poses for Men
1. Downward Facing Dog: Stretches the hamstrings, calves, and shoulders while building upper body strength. Bend the knees if your hamstrings are tight.
2. Low Lunge (Anjaneyasana): Opens the hip flexors, which are chronically tight in men who sit at desks or drive long distances, and lengthens thigh muscles.
3. Deer pose or 90/90: Hip and groin opener. Uncomfortable at first, transformative over time.
4. Warrior 1: Lengthens calf muscles and opens shoulders. Excellent for tennis players and dog walkers.
5. Warrior III: Builds balance, core stability, and single-leg strength. Excellent for runners, cyclists, and anyone who plays sport.
6. Plank and Chaturanga: Build core, chest, and arm strength. Men often excel at these — they provide a bridge between gym training and yoga.
Who This Is Suitable For
Any man, regardless of age, fitness level, or flexibility. Whether you are a rugby player, a desk worker, a runner, or someone who simply wants to move better and hurt less.
Saying you are too stiff for yoga is like saying you are too out of shape for the gym. The practice meets you where you are.
